US women on Tuesday night lost 2-1 in the Women’s European Championship final against Portugal in the US.
The game was halted as the ball bounced from the net.
“The goal was off target.
There were two players in the box that were on the line,” coach Jill Ellis told reporters after the match.
“I just couldn’t make the first pass.”
“It’s disappointing because we had a good start and we were trying to play a little bit better,” said midfielder Morgan Brian.
“There were a lot of good chances.
We didn’t score any goals.”
It was the first loss for the USWNT, who had a 1-0 win over Belgium on Wednesday night.
“I thought we played well, but it wasn’t a perfect performance,” Ellis said.
“We’ve got to make sure we’re focused, and we’re trying to get back to the winning mentality.
It was a tough match.
The goal was bad, but the team did a great job.”
The USWOMEN’s coach said there was a “significant amount of negativity” towards the players.
“There was a lot about us, and I know some of it’s on the player level,” Ellis added.
“But we have to put it behind us.
I know it’s a tough situation right now, but I’m sure we’ll bounce back.”
