Saints fans have celebrated after beating the Newcastle Jets in their first league game since the 2010 season.
The Saints won at St James’ Park, 4-0, but the Jets have since beaten Newcastle in a thrilling second game in succession.
They were given the nod ahead of a weekend trip to Wembley to take on Leicester, who have been struggling for form and confidence in recent weeks.
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Saints midfielder and captain Mark Carradine.
“We’ve had a bit of time to get accustomed to the pressure of playing against a team that has been struggling a bit.”
Newcastle’s best chance came from winger Luke Garbutt, who set up a goal with a superb pass.
But Saints defender Toby Alderweireld was also in the right place at the right time to thwart the attacking force.
St James’ park is also the site of the 2010 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
There have been some early signs of a bounceback from the slump following a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool in October.
